I very much enjoyed this absorbing and informative historical novel.It is both a love story and a very readable history lesson Set in Israel in 1951-52 when the fledgling state had just won the War of Independence and been established, and was struggling to absorb millions of Jewish refugees both form the Holocaust in Europe and from the Middle East and North Africa. Israel is also faces terrorist raids by the so called fedayeen (Palestinian Arab terrorist gangs) who murdered several hundred Jewish civilians in the early 50s) Meir Rosen is a Holocaust survivor who lives with Tamar (the only other person in his family to escape the Holocaust) and her Sabra husband Avi Shenar.He hides his deep pin at what he went through and the loss of his family in the Holocaust) taciturn cynical demeanor, his blunt lack of tact, and his vast knowledge and tendency to lecture and philosophize. His best friend is another Holocaust survivor Yehuda Rabinowiz
His life changes when he meets the fascinating Rachel,originally from South Africa, and the widow of a War of Independence hero and general Uzi Levi who fell in that war. Rachel is also a mother of two teenage sons.

Within the story line are the fascinating history of the Jews and Israel, the ancient history of Israel, the exile, the beginnings and growth of modern Zionism, the pogroms by Arabs against Jews in Palestine in the 1920s and 30s. the betrayal by the British colonial authorities of the Jews and the War of Independence A them that is repeated in the conversations is how several figures and forces in history including the early Christian Church, , Mohammad, Martin Luther, and in the 20th century the Soviet Communists turned from favouring the Jews to viciously persecuting them when the Jews would not abandon their faith and embrace the religions or ideologies of these forces and figures.
The conversations on religion, history and politics teach us about these things in an entertaining way, but don't draw back from the love story and characterization of the novel. Eventually Meir is persuaded by Rachel, to open up to her about the horrrors and loss he experienced in the Holocaust at the hands of the Nazis and their sympathizers. The fear and determination of the Jews of Israel against Arab aggression and hate are also well illustrated.
The story ends happily for Meir and Rachel at a time when Israel was at its apex of idealism and a ethic of all for one and one for all
